December 1-22, 2010 LAURA WESTBYThe Phoenix Gallery is proud to present LAURA WESTBY'S first Solo Exhibition "TEARS OF THE SUN" Acrylic Paintings on Canvas, December 1 - 22, 2010.To look at light, there is the energy of color in wave and the inertia of mass in particle. But in the shadow, there is the quiet of time and distance. The structure is never the same; it is constant at one given moment, working congruently with infinite vectors of wave and inertia. These paintings are a poetic statement of light in color and in the inertia of volume. They are meant to give an experience of color at a given moment over an area of time. LESLIE CARABAS "Exquisite" Cotton and Blends 30" x 45" These pieces represent work from 2009 and 2010. The process for this series began with folding and tying, dyeing and drawing, discharging and re-dying fabrics. As segments, these fabrics did not easily co-exist within their shared space. By drawing into the composition with thread, creating lines and echoing texture and pattern, I forced a dialogue among the pieces and united them into an alliance. BETH CARTLAND "A Dance With Yellow #2" Oil on Canvas 18" x 24" The line, the color the energy, the anticipation of change - that's what I love about painting. I add a line, change a color and everything moves around, it is always a new dance. BUSSER HOWELL "Missing Migrants" Paint, Paper on Linen Canvas 48" x 96" My new work continues to deal with a Vedantic search for harmony and truth. The basis of these works started several years ago as paper collages on canvas. By revisiting these works, adapting new techniques, and making them new, I attempt to merge time in search of a greater universal message that extends beyond a particular period or emotional state. Through the addition and subtraction of both paper and paint, I reduce the image to a more simplistic geometric form in an attempt to uncover the true essence of the work while releasing the luminosity contained within its structure. GARY PAUL STUTLER "Moon" Oil on Linen 72" x 42" "Moon" expresses thematic ideas that are often seen in my work: The juxtaposition of human activity within the natural world, and my fascination with color and night-time subject matter. But beyond any self-conscious references to nature versus culture, this painting is about the rush of feeling experienced in the presence of the incongruous energies from a discarded human past and a frenetic human present, under the canopy of a sweeping ancient sky. In a moment, that past and present are not experienced as separate entities, but as a simultaneous unity. CHRISTA TOOLE "Light Refraction" Oil, Pencil on Wood 12" x 12" Christa Toole's work explores the subjects of space, energy and transformation. Using paint, pencil, wax and other materials, her work evokes the concept of the transmutation of energy. What can at once refer to the micro levels of biology can also represent the macro levels of space, and both of their infinite complexities. The subject matter simultaneously highlights the similarities in form of the two, and underscores the persistent, yet intricate, laws of the universe.
