PHOENIX GALLERY 2010 ASSOCIATE ARTISTS: PETERANTHONIE VAN DE KREEKE & JOHN HAMPSHIRE

PeterAnthonie Van De Kreeke: "Mytho Poetic Land and Rock Icons"

Urban Desert

After workshops in New York and Paris I'm convinced, without further explanation or evidence, that my paintings will reveal the secret of my thinking. Subsequently I can make this internal self "something of me" understandable for me and hopefully also for others.

Summarized, my paintings are an image of the movement of a multi cultural society. Possibly this could lead to a kind of collective formula, which is going to overrule symbolic systems and apart from religious; political and / or social environment, these paintings could then really made communication possible.
John Hampshire: "Tornadic Landscapes"
Labyrinth =220, marker on panel. 36x48"

I am working with tornado imagery as references. The drawings are labyrinths, interwoven lines that vary in lengths and densities to imply =variations in lights and darks. I am interested in producing works that have a lot of transient subtleties. The labyrinthine process of construction is also a self refining one, starting vary vague and abstract with the image slowly materializing as the drawing process continues.
CHRISTA TOOLE: "Event Horizon"

Gravitational Wave, 2009
oil, pencil, thread, wax on wood, 12"x12"

Christa Toole's work explores the subjects of space, energy and transformation. Using paint, thread, wax and other materials in her work, the work evokes the concept of the transmutation of energy. What can at once refer to the micro levels of biology can also represent the macro levels of space and both of their infinite complexities. The subject matter simultaneously highlights the similarities in form of the two and underscores the persistent yet intricate laws of the universe. Energy is a constant in all levels. Energy moves from one realm into another, its properties may change but the force remains invariable.

Christa Toole was chosen as a winner of the National Juried Competition curated by Tricia Yunjoo Paik, Curatorial Assistant, Museum of Modern Art at Phoenix Gallery in 2006. She has exhibited her work at many galleries and art fairs in New York City and around the world including Art Basel Miami, Cue Gallery, Artists Space, NurtureArt, Zone Chelsea, Galerie Scherer8 (Berlin, Germany), Palazzo Gotico (Piacenza, Italy) and the Phoenix Center for Contemporary Art among others. She has also curated exhibits most recently at Phoenix Gallery in 2007. She will be exhibiting with Open Ground at the Fountain Art Fair in New York March 4-7, 2010.
