GRETL BAUER: White
VARANASI (DETAIL), 2014 ACRYLIC AND CRUMPLED NEWSPRINT ON CANVAS
Leonardo Da Vinci described white as the first color the color without which no color can be seen. Indeed, for an
artist, white is far from an absence of color but rather an affirmation. I return to white again and again.
Long associated with purity, tranquility, safety and innocence, white is also the color of mourning, of sacredness, of things
inviolate. Because it contains both light and profoundness, white enables fresh beginnings as well as evokes a sense of
wholeness. For me, the power of white lies in the mysterious energy which it bears, an energy which conveys clarity and
spaciousness and therefore possibility.

CHRISTA TOOLE: Echo
Mixed media and oil
Oil, thread, wax on wood, 12" x 12" each
Christa Toole's work explores the subjects of biology, science, energy and transformation. Using paint, thread, wax and other materials, her work transforms these materials into a fluid image. In this exhibit she continues to explore themes of space, energy and sound with pattern, line, and form. Each piece is a set of two that reflect and interact with the other.
