RECEPTION: May 28, 6:00 - 8:00 PM LAUFEY VILHJALMSDOTTIR BUSTANY: RHYME AND RHYTHM "Hringhenda" Oil on Canvas 36" x 48" This year my work has taken a new turn as I try to distill the essence of colors within the confinements of 17th century Icelandic poetic structures. These structures are based on both end-rhyme and in-rhyme which gives the poem a rounded/symmetrical form called Hringhenda. Some Hringhendas can be read both forward and backwards which is called Slettubond. I am using both Hringhenda and Slettubond in my paintings with color as the main subject. YOUNG JA YOON: SKY SKY 101 Oil/Canvas 36" x 108" This time.... Being engaged in and preparing this exhibition, I have tried to delineate the world of the sky in the light of my eyes. As a young girl growing up in a little Korean country village, gazing at the stars and moonlight in the night sky always captivated me. At sixteen, reading over Baudelaire's poem (la -bas..la -bas... les merveilleux nuages! ) I loved and cherished the beautiful clouds drifting by. At nineteen, lying in a snow field and looking at the splendid colors of the sky, I couldn't help but find myself exclaiming my joy. As a grownup, I was considerably bothered by the sight of the sky diminished by all the buildings that had risen up. At last, standing on the mountain, I am ready to spread and fly with the wings of my soul. After June 20th, the gallery is closed until September 9th for renovation. The winner of the 2009 Fellowship will be announced in September 2009. |
