GRETL
BAUER: WORKS ON PAPER / SCULPTURE
LITTLE VOYAGE
2011
Gretl Bauer uses paper in subtle and surprising ways:
perforating it, threading through it, folding it or crumpling it,
with results that are compelling and mysterious. At the same time,
her layers of threaded lines have a cumulative power - they are
oases of stillness, even as they beckon us to move closer and
intrigue us with shifting perception as we pass. Bauer is concerned
with the capturing of light, yet paradoxically, regardless of the
material she employs her work makes us aware of light's
immateriality. This evanescence is suggestive of place and memory,
of time's fleetness, of the world's fragility and our own. Anodyne
to chaos, these works are spare and lyrical invitations to
attentiveness. Also on view are sculptures of metal, stone, wood and
thread as well as related wall pieces of crumpled newsprint. http://www.gretlbauer.com/
LAUFEY VILHJALMSDOTTIR BUSTANY: LEBANON
 "Lebanon" Oil on Linen
48"x36"
A friend of mine told me that a Haiku poem could be
one word. One word may evoke a thousand images. An image
equals a thousand words. Lebanon.
This exhibit
includes paintings inspired by Lebanon. As an Icelander married to a
Lebanese, I explore here the significations of Lebanon both through
abstractions and symbolic realism.
