ELISE ANSEL
WAYNE PAIGE

October 31-November 24, 2012
DUE TO HURRICANE SANDY THE RECEPTION FOR WAYNE PAIGE WILL BE HELD ON
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23, FROM 6-8 PM

ELISE ANSEL
A Solo Exhibition of paintings: (re)Cycle

"Movable Feast", Oil on Canvas

I make abstract paintings that are derived from three distinct sources: old master paintings, photojournalism, and digital snapshots of the word around me. I am interested in using paint as a vehicle for feeling or sensation rather than as a means of illustration. My method is inspired by Cezanne's idea of "le petit sensation," of using each brush stroke to communicate a sensation that is simultaneously optical and emotional. The paintings begin with a specific pictorial point of departure but then resolve into abstraction as the representational content is balanced and ultimately eclipsed by my focus upon color, composition and the materiality of the paint. Linear, rational readings are interrupted and replaced with a capacious awareness of the sensuous possibilities of paint. I lean into the banal in order to create in myself and in the viewer the ability to see the world freshly.

WAYNE PAIGE
A Solo Exhibition of Drawings and Paintings

Focusing on events and scenarios that have impacted the modern landscape, I have created a body of work using pointillism in both my pen and ink drawings and oil on canvas paintings. The drawings represent the encroachment of technology on the landscape. The sun drenched paintings represent the results of the impact. Throughout the works, inhabitants resembling clothespins "Binarians" are floating, flying and fleeing from untold events. Wayne Paige has been exhibiting his art since 1972 with 21 one-person art shows to his credit.
The artist is scheduled to give an Artist talk on November 1, 2012 at 7:15 pm.
