ARTIST STATEMENT
My name is Gina Petrecca. I’m a photographer. This series is from the old prison “Eastern State Penitentiary” located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I chose to shoot this for many reasons. I love horror movies and there was something very ominous about it. I feel creeped out walking through the cell blocks. Its dark in some places, but then you see very little light in some cells. It makes me wonder how bad it must have been. I’m sure there were people that deserved to be there. I feel sorry for the ones that were wrongly accused and forced to be there. You never know who was lonely, sick, or even died. I’m not someone that necessarily believes in ghosts but you get a weird feeling walking around. There are some hallways you can’t even go in because they are blocked off. The building itself is very broken down. I do like that you can tour the building and see the history behind it. I wanted to capture what it looks like today because abandoned places have a history. I always like to know what the building used to be, but I also like to show what it looks like now.

About me: I loved photography when I was growing up. I became fascinated with preserving memories. I love taking pictures of still life, architecture, landscapes, nature, and animals. Anything in those categories I just love. I pretty much get inspired by colors, shapes, or anything different. My inspiration changes depending on the situations I find myself in. Sometimes an idea just pops in my head and I just do it. I feel every artist is unique and their tastes are different. I can’t fit myself in a category. I just do what I want and enjoy the uniqueness that each moment presents.
