“I can’t improve on nature, but I can add my personal interpretation. This exhibition, consists of landscape paintings completed during the last several years. They were developed from photographs that I have taken of scenes that I think are beautiful or interesting. This group includes vibrant oil and acrylic paintings of Hollywood Bay in Florida, where sunsets are a pyrotechnic feat of nature. I have also highlighted the mangrove trees that grow in Florida, with roots reaching into the bays, home to aquatic life. These beautiful trees protect coastal Florida from storms. Other paintings that I have included highlight local Northern New Jersey water scenes of estuaries.
Sometimes I add a disquieting element to the landscape, like the eerie light caused by a lightening strikes over the Hudson River and NYC. The world at large is filled with unsettling events. The scenery is real but my imagination led me to interpret a storm over the river, with NYC in the distance. I wanted to reflect a sense of danger in my composition, echoing danger in the world at large. As you can see, when I paint landscapes, creating a mood is important to me.“
