Artist Statement
This body of work is about simplicity, inspired by color.
I am an expressionist. I do not try to create images of reality. I work to create mood through color and enjoy the process of creation. I enjoy the simplicity yet complexity of color, the freedom, and joy of Matisse’s early work and the elongated distortion of fashion illustration. Combining what I learn from each of these, I use the female figure and color to create images that are hopefully ‘devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter’ and just a comforting place to rest your eyes and enjoy.
My mantra when creating art is:
“I dream of an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter…”~Henri Matisse

Wendy Foster received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design. She also earned an art education certification from Armstrong Atlantic State and a Masters of Fine Arts degree in painting from Georgia Southern University.
Much of her work and life have been spent either creating art or trying to help others create art. Her show Septenary had viewers participate in the creation of the final art project. And her word web walls ask viewers to add their voice to the work with words or drawings based around one central question or idea. In 2007 she created the Puzzle Peace Project which had students and community leader’s working together to create a large puzzle that represented their community and their “piece” in it.
The work she creates on her own is meant to give the viewer something pleasant to view it tends to be brightly colored, expressive and figurative. She enjoys the simplicity and complexity of color.
She grew up on a large farm in Northern Indiana but has lived in Ashland, KY for the past ten years where she paints and teaches art appreciation, drawing and painting at the community college.
