INVITATIONAL EXHIBITION
Theodore Heubein
ARTIST STATEMENT
Whenever possible I paint on site, including sitting on a beach with walrus, climbing an iceberg in a fjord to paint from, and painting underwater with scuba gear. I work using Transparent Watercolors, Acrylics, and Oils, depending on what I feel can best express the scene (as well as what materials I can travel with!).
Capturing these images of where I am as I am in that moment makes the artwork a part of the experience - including the sight, smell, weather, humidity and emotions experienced. I hope to share these feelings with the viewer as close to the immediacy of this experience as I can. I use a camera as well, for later exploration of the experience in the studio from my reference.
I share a portion of the sale of my pieces with several marine non-profits and National Parks to raise awareness of and care for our resources.
Continuing projects include exploring new (for me) paint colors, painting at night, and revisiting older subject matter with my current eyes.

Artwork started for me very early with a crayon abstract that covered the entirety of our interior stair wall at home. When this was cleaned and painted, I immediately proceeded to ‘redo’ my masterpiece. I was between four and five years old.
I have carried art supplies all over the world on my travels to create pieces onsite above (en plein air) and below (sous marine) the water. The rest of the pieces are produced after the fact from my photos taken on these trips.
Over the years I have been fortunate to enjoy participation in overseas art residencies, art shows, gallery exhibits, and commission assignments. I have also taught introduction to art courses to expose young students to the possibilities color and composition bring to seeing the world around them in new ways.
Hope you enjoy the work and it helps to inspire you to visit a new, donate to a worthy cause, or just smile in remembering a place you’ve visited and have seen in a new way.
