"The Impending After"

May 25 - June 18, 2016
Reception:  Thursday, May 26, 6-8 PM

This new body of work is a reflection on the notion of the after.  Some afters are unavoidable.  Some afters can be prevented by considering the after during the before.  The after is always impending.  The crow seeks the after.  The crow feeds on the after.

Each piece is labor intensive. The beads are hand laid. The prints are made from slowly carved blocks and the encaustic pieces are the result of the wax mixing with oil paint as it is pushed by high heat.  I think of the afters as I make the work and I wonder if attention to the impending after during the before would have saved him, her, them.

The Journey

Gretl Bauer

Gretl Bauer's work weaves chance and intent into lyrical unity. She often employs the fortuitousness of the found with the deliberate and delicate rigor of the handmade. In these current pieces, elements such as stone and wood, paper and wash, nails and thread -- the primal and the finely wrought -- are coaxed to coexist in subtle dynamism.

Joseph O'Neill
"A Study in Black and White"

When we hear “black and white” we assume that is all we see. My photographs utilize tones and shades of grey. This grey expresses and gives my work emotion and depth. It reaches into your everyday perception, and has you look differently at the world. Perhaps you notice that these everyday objects and scenes that were once obscure or commonplace are different and new and your perspective has changed.

New York City is my muse. It captured my soul as a child and has never let it go. For long periods of my creative life, the city has been my subject, and my work begins with the place. The place, along with the right moment and light, determine what I shoot. At different times of day and at different times of the year, the city has a unique look and feel. My photography exists in and because of these distinct times and places.

I photograph often-overlooked perspectives of urban life and showcase details of this reality. With a sense of drama my photography offers a look at the world dramatically highlighted in sharp black and white geometrical forms with a clean and sharp edge. Employing contrasts of dark and light, I bring dynamic movement and a sense of shifting light. In an almost confrontational range. My aesthetic vividly envelopes the senses and invites you, the viewer to rethink the images of the world, encouraging you to enter this environment and experience a new view. New York City nourishes my creativity, and in return, I want to share what I love about it with the world.

Christa Toole

Christa Toole’s work explores the subjects of space, energy and transformation.  Using paint, thread, wax and other materials in her work, the work explores the transmutation of energy.  What can at once refer to the smallest cellular structures can also represent the expansive formations in space.  The subject matter simultaneously highlights the similarities in form of the two and underscores the persistent yet intricate laws of the universe.  Energy moves from one realm into another, its properties may change but the force remains invariable.
